Founded in 1981, Simpson & Co. Lawyers has provided expert legal advice and care to the community for over 35 years. As a general practice law firm we deal with many people from all walks of life. We make sure that everyone receives quality legal care irrespective of that person's' cultural background or financial position. We maintain solid relationships within the community believing that our clients continued success is our success.
Our extensive involvement in conveyancing procedures has lead to the development of the property transfer computer programme known as Protocols Convey. Using this state of the art application, we are able to process any property transaction, whether a large residential subdivision, a commercial property lease, or a simple cottage purchase, speedily and at a realistic fee.

J.C.Simpson graduated from Otago University Law School in 1973 and was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1974. He was also a Notary Public and had over thirty-five years of practical experience in private practice in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Jim founded Simpson & Co. and practiced in all along the Kapiti Coast. He used his considerable legal and business experience as a lawyer and also as a director of a number of private companies, partnerships and trading trusts to support the communities in which he lived and worked.
Sadly, in early 2018 Jim passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Jim's legacy will continue to give back to his community for many years and the values upon which he built Simco Lawyers remain the basis of our business.
Lauchie Griffin has over 30 years experience delivering a broad range of legal advice to corporate and private clients. His particular areas of specialty include property law, having acted for many prominent development companies. He is also an expert on trust and succession planning, regularly advising private clients on complex trust matters.
Lauchie strives to lift the bar of service excellence by looking at problems through a client’s eye and delivering simple but effective solutions. He is passionate about innovation and utilising technology to enhance the client experience. He is also passionate about fostering confident, well-rounded, talented lawyers who work collaboratively with their clients, committing to excellence in everything they do.
Betsyn McHardy is a corporate and finance lawyer with 15 years experience gained in top tier firms in New Zealand and the United Kingdom as well as ‘in-house’ for a leading Australasian bank. Her areas of speciality include business acquisitions, mergers, and reorganisations, financial market regulation, and managed funds and insurance. Betsyn also provides and acts for both lenders and borrower on a wide range of corporate finance matters.
From 2010 until 2015 Betsyn set up the regulatory and legal framework of an international NGO and subsequently held a senior management and leadership role in the development of a major educational facility in Tanzania. This experience of working in the not-for-profit sector has greatly influenced her perspective of the legal services sector on her return to legal practice.
Betsyn prides herself on delivering pragmatic solutions to complex legal problems and on being a trusted legal and business adviser to her clients.
Merlaina Donald LL.B B.A. Barrister & Solicitor
Merlaina comes to Simco with a specialty in immigration law. She has extensive experience in this area, having worked for Immigration New Zealand in onshore and offshore locations for several years. After leaving public service, Merlaina joined an award-winning immigration law firm with offices in Wellington and Auckland. She has co-presented seminars to immigration practitioners, and is a member of the New Zealand Law Society Wellington Branch Immigration and Refugee Committee. Since joining Simco, Merlaina has gained experience in property, estate and family matters. She brings a calm, reasoned approach to assisting clients.
