A bit about us

Founded in 1981, Simpson & Co. Lawyers has provided expert legal advice and care to the community for over 35 years. As a general practice law firm we deal with many people from all walks of life. We make sure that everyone receives quality legal care irrespective of that person's' cultural background or financial position. We maintain solid relationships within the community believing that our clients continued success is our success.

Our extensive involvement in conveyancing procedures has lead to the development of the property transfer computer programme known as Protocols Convey. Using this state of the art application, we are able to process any property transaction, whether a large residential subdivision, a commercial property lease, or a simple cottage purchase, speedily and at a realistic fee.

Jim Simpson Lawyer Notary Public


J.C.Simpson LLB. Notary Public FANZCN

J.C.Simpson graduated from Otago University Law School in 1973 and was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1974. He is also a Notary Public and has over thirty-five years of practical experience in private practice in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. He is the Principal here at Simpson & Co. and practices in all the offices along the Kapiti Coast: Paraparaumu, Otaki, Foxton & Mana. He has considerable legal and business experience as a lawyer and also as a director of a number of private companies, partnerships and trading trusts. Since joining Protocols he has been involved in software development and delivering seminars and tutorials relating to conveyancing.

Saskia Smids Lawyer


Saskia Smids LLB.

Saskia graduated from Victoria University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Law with Honours. Saskia joined the Simpson & Co. team in 2012 and specialises in separation advice, division of relationship property after the breakdown of a marriage or defacto relationship, disputes about the care of and contact with children, guardianship issues, family violence, paternity and adoption. Saskia also prepares prenuptial agreements to ensure your partner does not become entitled to a share of your property. She practises out of Paraparaumu, Otaki and Foxton and by appointment at Levin and Waikanae.

Alwyn O'Connor Lawyer


Alwyn O'Connor LLB.

Alwyn joined the team at Simpson & Co as a staff barrister and solicitor in 2014. Alwyn has worked extensively in areas of criminal law (including forfeiture of criminal proceeds and traffic matters) and declaratory civil litigation and has a proven record of success fighting fearlessly for his client's best interests. He holds notions of fairness, equality, pellucidity and justice in very high regard and of equal measure.  He has an approachable, easy to understand manner to his practice and he's always willing to assist and determined to achieve the best outcome for his clients.

Merlaina Donald Lawyer


Merlaina Donald LL.B B.A. Barrister & Solicitor

Merlaina comes to Simco with a specialty in immigration law. She has extensive experience in this area, having worked for Immigration New Zealand in onshore and offshore locations for several years. After leaving public service, Merlaina joined an award-winning immigration law firm with offices in Wellington and Auckland. She has co-presented seminars to immigration practitioners, and is a member of the New Zealand Law Society Wellington Branch Immigration and Refugee Committee. Since joining Simco, Merlaina has gained experience in property, estate and family matters. She brings a calm, reasoned approach to assisting clients.



Alethea Lombard B.luris LL.B.

After qualifying in South Africa, Alethea was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand. Her focus is mainly on property, leases, estates, trusts, relationship property and elder law.

She has a special interest in dispute resolution and is an accredited member of the NZ Law Society’s panel of Mediators as a Family Specialist.
